Kili Team to Participate in Community Service Day in Tanzania, Africa
Besides the incredible feat of making the trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro, one of the world’s highest peaks, at 19,340 feet, Foundation for Blind Children’s team of 8 blind climbers and 16 sighted guides will be visiting the Mwereni Integrated School for the Blind. This community service day on June 22, 2009 will be an amazing day for the two cultures to come together at the base of one of the Seven Summits of the world.
Nestled in the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the Moshi Municipality, the school is in need of many devices and items to assist in their mission to provide quality and equity of education for the blind students. The school was started in 1943 and in 1989 began to integrate visually impaired students. There are currently 47 students that are blind or visually impaired that are ranging in age from 6 to 15. Currently, the Mwereni School is working on a project called “Introduction of Assistive Technology for the Blind”.
The Kili team’s arrival comes at the perfect time, as they will be bringing many needed items for the school. Forty Perkins Braille Writers, braille paper, travel canes, sunglasses and magnifying glasses are among the items to be donated to the school. The team will be welcomed by the students and the entire community with native songs and dance. Afterward there will be a question and answer session and tour of the school and community, followed by a gift exchange.
When the Mwereni students were informed that the team would be visiting, they were so excited that they began clapping their hands and jumping all around with happiness and prayers. Their prayers were for the FBC team, in hopes that they will always succeed in their endeavors.
